The Button Pusher

Where there is a button, there is a button pusher. Button pushers love to push buttons. Who or what pushes your buttons? There is absolutely no reason for an individual to push your buttons. There are certain types of individuals that like to be in total control of another person’s life. This sort of behavior can cause a slip in the serenity with a recovering individual. There is a twelve step saying that goes…….You don’t have to accept an individual’s unacceptable behavior. Button pushing is only acceptable if it’s elevator buttons, doorbells, or alarm buttons etc. You get the picture. You are not a button. You are a human being with thoughts and feelings. How do you respond to button pushers? I have outbursts of yelling and screaming. This accomplishes absolutely nothing. The next time someone tries to push your buttons try this…..When you do or say_______, I feel_________. That statement is called an I statement. It helps an individual express their feelings in a positive manner. The statement will hopefully open the eyes of the button pusher. Here’s hoping to a New Year filled with positive I statements.
